Pet Care 101: Quick Guide to Dog Vaccinations

Just like for humans, our pets also need annual vaccinations. Read on to learn more about annual vaccinations for pups!

What’s in the 9-in-1 vaccination?

9-in-1 combination vaccine, also known as a core vaccine protecting against canine distemper (CD) virus, infectious canine hepatitis (ICH) caused by canine adenovirus type 1 (CAV-1), respiratory disease caused by canine adenovirus type 2 (CAV-2), canine parainfluenza caused by canine parainfluenza CPiV, enteritis caused by canine parvovirus (CPV) and CPV-2c and 4 strains of leptospirosis.

How often does the 9-in-1 vaccination need to be done?

The 9-in-1 is done annually because it protects against leptospirosis, which has to be done annually.

As for the other core vaccines (parvo, distemper, adenovirus) which is a part of the 9-in-1 in a single-animal setting, it is possible to do a blood test (known as a titre test) to check if your pet is still protected.  If your pet is still protected, you can skip the other core vaccines, otherwise your pet will still require a repeat vaccination. But in multi pet households, our vets recommend annual vaccinations.

For older dogs – the vaccination for leptospirosis still has to be given annually. For the core vaccines, it can be given annually or when the titre check shows that the levels are low (indicating that your dog needs to be re-vaccinated.)

How often does the Pneumovax (kennel cough) vaccine need to be done?

If a dog hasn’t been on it before or it has lapsed, your dog will need two vaccinations.  If your dog has been on regular kennel cough vaccinations, then it only requires annual vaccinations to keep it protected against kennel cough.
