Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Disease (AHPND), often referred to as EMS (Early Mortality Syndrome), is caused by certain strains of Vibrio parahaemolyticus bacteria and primarily impacts the hepatopancreas, which is a critical digestive organ in shrimp. The onset of AHPND is characterized by symptoms such as lethargy, loss of appetite, and a pale or empty hepatopancreas, ultimately leading to high mortality rates within the affected shrimp ponds.
