Pet got a warning because of playing with a hazardous item in house

It’s National Poison Prevention Week, a timely reminder to consider the potential hazards lurking within our own homes – especially for our curious and adventurous furry friends. While common household items may seem harmless to us, they can be highly toxic to pets.

Here are 5 hidden dangers to be aware of, and how to keep your pet safe:

1. Detergent and Soap

Detergent and soap

These seemingly ordinary cleaning products can irritate a pet’s mouth, stomach, and intestines if ingested. Symptoms include vomiting, drooling, diarrhoea, and difficulty breathing.

2. Human Medication

Human Medication

Over-the-counter pain relievers, antidepressants, and even vitamins can be deadly for pets. Keep all medications securely stored and out of reach.

3. Indoor Plants

Indoor Plants such as Lillies and Azalea flowers

Many popular houseplants, such as lilies for cats and azaleas for dogs, are highly poisonous. Ingestion can cause severe vomiting, diarrhoea, tremors, and even organ failure.

4. Floor Cleaners

Cleaning products for floor

The harsh chemicals in floor cleaners can irritate a pet’s paws and digestive system if licked or ingested. Choose pet-safe cleaning products whenever possible.

5. Rodenticides (Rat Poison)

These products are designed to kill rodents but can also be lethal to pets if ingested.  Store rodenticides securely and consider alternative pest control methods.

What to Do if You Think Your Pet Has Been Poisoned

1. Act Quickly: Time is of the essence. If you suspect your pet has ingested something poisonous, call your veterinarian or a 24-hour emergency pet clinic or hospital immediately. In Singapore, here are some resources:

  • Westside Emergency Vet: +65 6931 0095
  • VES Emergency and Specialty Hospital: +65 6266 0232
  • Advanced VetCare Veterinary Centre (Bedok): +65 6636 1788

2. Do Not Induce Vomiting (Unless Instructed): This can worsen the situation for some toxins.

3. Stay Calm and Monitor Your Pet: Keep your pet comfortable and monitor their breathing and heart rate until help arrives.
